Colorado River Update: Help Create a Vast New National Monument Around the Grand Canyon!

Hi Friends of the Colorado River!

We’re excited to offer you a meaningful sign-on opportunity to help create a vast new National Monument around the Grand Canyon. So far, nearly 150,000 people have added their name to this sign-on page, and our organization — Save The Colorado — is a signer as well.

Started by the “Grand Canyon Tribal Coalition”, the proposed new National Monument would protect ~1 million acres of federal land from mining and other degradation. Called the Baaj Nwaavjo I’tah Kukveni Grand Canyon National Monument, the monument would build on the tribes’ longstanding effort to permanently protect the region.

Baaj Nwaavjo means “where tribes roam” for the Havasupai Tribe, and I’tah Kukveni means “our ancestral footprints” for the Hopi Tribe.

The sign on page, where you can learn more, is here at “Keep It Grand AZ”: https://keepitgrandaz.org/

Protecting this land goes far beyond meeting the needs of tribes to protecting their ancestral landscape. It’s also meaningful Climate Action because it protects biodiversity and ecosystem processes as well as the carbon sequestration offered by trees, shrubs, and grasses on native landscapes. Further, protecting the landscape from mining also can protect the water quality of the Colorado River and its tributaries flowing in the surrounding canyons.

Thank you for signing on the KEEPITGRANDAZ.org.

We strongly encourage President Biden to establish this new National Monument!
