Colorado River Update: We End 2022 With A Victory!

Hi Friends of the Colorado River,

We are ending 2022 on a high note, with a victory against two proposed dams near Grand Canyon National Park and the Little Colorado River! A few weeks ago, a private hydropower company named ‘Pumped Hydro Storage LLC’ withdrew two of its three proposals to build hydropower dams on creeks near the Little Colorado River before the river meets Grand Canyon National Park. Arizona News Connection covered the story here.

In part, the projects were withdrawn because a coalition of groups, led by Save The Colorado and represented by the law firm Earthjustice, jumped into action against them. Damming rivers near Grand Canyon National Park is a ridiculous idea whether its for hydropower or any other purpose. Further, the landscape of Arizona is bathed in sunshine and if there’s a need for more electricity, it should be created using solar, not hydropower.

Although we helped stop two projects, the same developer is proposing a third project, called the “Big Canyon Project”, in the same drainage just upstream of the Little Colorado River. We and our coalition have now doubled-down against this disastrous project and we are committed to fighting it for as long as it takes to kill it.

As the Colorado River chaos accelerates, it’s great to hear of some actual GOOD NEWS, and so we are excited to share this with you. Save The Colorado is the only organization in the Southwest U.S. that supports the protection of rivers by tracking and opposing every proposed dam/diversion/pipeline project. Whether for hydropower or water supply, it’s crazy to be building more dams on a river system that is collapsing.

As we race into 2023, we will continue to do everything we can to protect and restore the Colorado River and its tributaries across the Southwest U.S.
